Of course, as Sojiro had approached the small shack, there was only two people that were sitting outside. They seemed to be like older men that were sitting around the table playing a game of shogi, a game that Sojiro had never really understood how to play. As he approached the old men, they would both be Moon Shinobi but they would still offer to have the male play with them. He explained that he didn't know how to play and they said it didn't matter, they still had a few hours left on their shift here before they were supposed to head out. So, what would follow was an intense training session of watching the two old men play an game before they would take turns playing against Sojiro, teaching him the basics and a couple of manuvers. Of course, there was no way that the man was going to beat these experts on his first try but it was clear that he was getting into the game, more than he thought he would ever do. Soon the hours would seemingly start to pass by and it would be night, the old men being alarmed at how they had lost track of time. They had to get home to their families but they would offer to let Sojiro keep the board, so long as he put it away and put it inside before he left.
As they would leave Sojiro alone with himself, he would proceed to play a series of games by himself and against himself, trying to see if he could come up with some type of strategy. Honestly, as Sojiro had been playing around on the board and moving around, it wasn't like he was ignoring his job. His senses were still sharp and his nose had been paying attention for any stray scents, but there didn't seem to be any. As the hours continued to go forth, there was a type of frustration that was starting to overtake him because he would keep putting himself in impossible situations. Either the simulations he ran were too basic or they didn't make any sense, relying on the opponent to be an amateur. As he continued to play, a few birds had come to perch on the chair opposite of him to watch while he was playing. The man had his brows furrowed together for more time than he thought possible, before there was the scent of people approaching that caught his attention. But, he would immediately relax, noticing it had been the same men from the night before. It was then, that Sojiro had noticed the night was gone and the sun had blessed him with its presence again. He furrowed his brows together as he looked up, not even feeling tired as he sat there looking at the board.
Sojiro would explain his frustrations to the men and they would laugh, though not at him. They understood where he was tricking himself up at and could, in fact, help him. So, before Sojiro's shift would fully be over for protecting this place... The three men would continue to engage in a series of Shogi games. Although it had only been less than a day since they had last met, the two older men were impressed by the changes that Sojiro had made to his strategy. There was definitely some hope for the young man when it came to the future of Shogi. Sitting around and playing with these men had not been how Sojiro was hoping that his time in the forest would go but it was definitely a preferred way. The ideas presented in Shogi were something the men said you could carry out into the rest of their lives, helping them better themselves in more way than one. Although Sojiro was enjoying the game, he doubted that it could have such profound effects like they were claiming. He liked the men but he wasn't going to just start drinking from the same punch bowl as them all of the sudden.
Regardless of that, it was still a good time. And, before he knew it, there was another group of Shinobi that were starting to come down the road. It was a trio of Moon Shinobi, most of them younger men, who would great them. It seemed like it was time for the new group of Shinobi to take over protecting the small shack and for the others to head off on their other duties. It was a shame to have to call an end to what Sojiro was doing but there was no other option. Sojiro would thank the men for showing him this game and, they would thank him for being so open minded about the process. To show their thanks, they would actually gift Sojiro Sakura with the Shogi board they had been playing with.
